Classical Hack At Mini-Wars
Here are a few photographs, taken by Lynne and me, of Alexander's siege of Tyre circa 334 B.C. as demonstrated with Classical Hack Ancient Warfare 600 B.C. to 600 A.D., Second Ed. Mini-War, 2003 A.D. held in Glendale, California. The scenario was designed after accounts of the Siege of Tyre. Later I will be adding related topics dealing with Alexander The Great and our newly released Classical Hack Scenarios Macedonia.

An After Action Report: Mini Wars
One of the best things about our hobby is the places we get to go and the people we meet once we get there. Conventions do not have to be large to be great events, as I have mentioned about The Siege of Augusta. It is always the same. It's about the people. Mini Wars was held in Glendale, California. Glendale is just north of LA and Hollywood. We were happy to be invited there by Steve Verdoliva, owner of The Adventurers' Guild of Riverside, who we met at Origins 2003.
California we found to be an extremely easy place to get around in. It is to date the only place we have traveled to where everyone we met knew how to give great directions. They always validated what our maps showed us. Our first stop after getting settled was Brookhurst Hobbies. We got to meet the elusive Henry. Not the Fifth, Henry the owner. Larry and Eric gave us the grand tour.
As I said a good convention does not have to be held in a grand place with thousands of people. Lynne and I think that the real gamers are at the smaller and more intimate conventions, like Augusta, Cowpens, Southern Front and naturally Mini Wars. It was odd in that we saw many familiar faces. Faces we have seen at Historicon and Cold Wars. We had seen Marcelo Figueroa and Joe before at Lancaster.
There were a number of games besides Tyre. While Tyre was well received it would be tiresom not to mention some of the other fine events that were hosted. Steve put on a smart looking ancients game using Might of Arms (I think). Then there was Bill Witthans of Historical Hobbies, who put on a fantatic Battles By G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. game. There was a chariot game which I missed, Lynne said it was nothing short of a rollicking good time. Then there were a number of WW II games which really looked top notch. Marcello put on a fun Sunday morning WW II battle. Naturally we saw Steve Phenow who is getting me some "more realistic" catapultae and balistae for my next siege games.
It would be just plain dumb not to see some of the sights while in different places. So we made time to go to downtown Hollywood. That's the photo with the Elephant. Disneyland, the real one that Walt first put up was just a hop skip and a jump from Brookhurst Hobbies. Both are worth the trip. Lincoln Parkway pales to nothing compared to Hollywood and Glendale. Glendale has a number of book stores I might Add. Yes Allan (Fleming) I have finally visited Brookhurst Hobbies. Tell the Queen we hope to come and see you next year. As you can see I am indeed taller by an ich of my boyhood hero; Mickey.
Finally, I would like to thank all the gamers we met and for their generous and gracious hospitality which they extended to Lynne and me. Guys of HMGS PSW, you made our year. We will certainly return!
