Siege of Troy: Circa 1184 B.C.

One of the best things I liked about the Troy Project I have started is that I was able to give seminars on Tojan Period Civil and Military history. In doing so I was able to give my half hour talk (this was at Origins for their War College) and then take my group over to Troy. Once there we had Q and A. We expect to be spending time giving talks at local schools and colleges in Western New York.

The Black Ships at Troy

I must admit one of the things that worked really well were the Black Ships. In lead these are a fortune. So last winter Lynne came up with a brilliant way to construct over 15 ships for The Siege of Troy. I made a scan of ship diagrams and she took it from there. Putting her dress making skills to use she made a pattern much like a dress maker would do. The pattern was scaled to 25mm. Lynne was able to make a two sided print on index stock. Then she printed the patterns and cut them out. How she lined it up is beyond me but it worked. We were going to do several dozen and would have except we felt 15 were plenty. What would I do without Lynne?

Here are some of the Black Ships we used. The first one is under construction and thus is not painted. The rest were made to look like they had knocked around a while and were deliberately rough. Detailing was done by going to Wal-Mart and getting braided trim. That was my idea. This braiding was cut and then glued to the bows and sterns of each ship. I used latch hook material of plastic to do the latice work.

As for the interior of the ships some had seating for the rowers and others had some seating or none to show boat repair work and old age. Each had a fore castle and an aft castle made from John Hutt's plastic sheeting. This worked great for wood planking decks.

Returning To The City

Returning to the city I have here some more views. I tried to stick to the existing plans as best I could. Where the plans failed details I used Peter Connolly's illustrations. Nothing in the film Troy was usable as for Troy they used the gate defenses of Athens from about 300 B.C. This was similar to my Atrax demo which can be seen on this site too.

I will be adding more photographs as I find the time to put them on the site. this will include models of siege engines, siege equipment and my figures close up. Research and test playing has delayed the production of Homeric Hack until Fall In! 2004. But the work will continue with the building of the lower city and other period sites like Tiryns . I want to rebuild as many of the places mentioned in Homer as possible. Hopefully I can make up for the movie Troy by giving lectures at schools and conventions. Hopefully.
