Gates Shall Not Prevail!
The next image is the main gate. Here the defenders can sally out to man the outer works which are earth filled and clad with planking.
Each has a plank flooring as do the connecting curtain walls. This would make the defenses slippery in the rain. However if these were
not laid down the defenders would be knee deep in mud.
Here are the defenders running out of the older Norman gates to defend the outer works.
