Oh, What A Relief It Is!
During the battle which was fought at Cold Wars the defenders did exactly that. This sally drew enough units of the attackers off from the relief column that it tipped the balance in favor of the defenders. You can see this in the lower left of the photograph, where the relief force is arriving.
